Accomplishments and Recognition

  • SLCD is chartered through the New York State Board of Regents.
  • SLCD is approved as an educational organization by the New York State Education Department.
  • Since 1985, more than 95% of SLCD's preschool children have been able to attend school in a less restrictive setting upon completion of SLCD's intensive language immersion program.
  • SLCD's ground-breaking inclusive education program enables preschool children to learn alongside their typical peers.
  • SLCD was one of the first programs of its kind in New York State and remains one of the few specialized schools in the nation continuing to develop innovative programs for students with language and autism spectrum disorders.
  • Our School has been recognized as a model program by the New York State Legislature.
  • In 1990, SLCD moved to a leased school building in North Bellmore to expand its preschool program and its school- age programs to third grade.
  • In 1995, SLCD opened a community-based early childhood program with an enrichment curriculum for typical children.  The New York State Legislature acknowledged SLCD's program as “outstanding” in the field of speech pathology and special education.   SLCD uses an innovative model of collaborative programming in which a professional team coordinates goals and activities for each child.
  • In 1996, SLCD developed inclusive preschool and kindergarten programs which integrated children with and without disabilities.
  • In 1998, SLCD acquired the South Elementary School in Glen Cove, New York and began a massive renovation and reconstruction of the grounds, to create a permanent home for the School's programs.  The newly renovated facility presently provides services for 325 children with and without disabilities.  
  • In 2001, SLCD expanded its elementary school program to sixth grade.
  • In 2004, SLCD expanded its program to include grades 7 and 8 in Glen Cove.
  • In 2006, SLCD opened Middle and High School Programs in Woodside, Queens.
