School for Language and Communication Development Home

Our Mission

SLCD's mission is to identify children with language and autism spectrum disorders as early as possible, teach them to communicate, and help them lead an independent life. We believe that language is the foundation for all educational learning and academic success.

Schools & Programs

Pre-K & Elementary

SLCD's Preschool Program focuses on providing language-based learning for children to establish the foundation for their educational and social development and prepare them for a world filled with words, sentences, stories and messages. Our Elementary School program focuses on the relationship between language development and academic success, providing intensive language immersion and academic instruction for students with language and autism spectrum disorders in a six and one-half hour school day.

Middle School

SLCD's Middle School programs prepare students for a future of active participation in their communities as well as productive independence. Our program is designed to meet the needs of students whose language and learning weaknesses prevent them from being successful in other academic programs. The majority of students accepted into the SLCD middle school program typically present with language disorders, autism spectrum disorders, learning disabilities and other health impairments. It is our belief that language learning provides the foundation for all content areas of academic instruction.

High School

SLCD's High School program prepares students for a future of active participation within their respective communities as well as productive independence. Located in Richmond Hill, the High School is designed to meet the unique needs of students whose language and learning weaknesses prevent them from being successful in other academic programs.

ABLE Community Services

Able Community Services is a not-for-profit agency which is part of a family of programs. It was established to meet the needs of adults with developmental disabilities who were graduating from the School for Language and Communication Development and/or other local high schools.
Able House Residences provide adults of all abilities with a family-based living experience which supports their individual needs, choices and interests. Adults from all walks of life are invited to join our living community of actively-engaged individuals. We provide a creative living and working environment which facilitates personal growth.
